The steady and gradual change in a species of a given area with respect to the changing environment is known as ecological succession, and It is an expected change and is an inescapable process of nature as all the biotic components have to keep up with the fluctuations in our environment. The ultimate object of this process is to attain equilibrium in the ecosystem. The community that accomplishes this object is named a climax community. In an effort to attain this equilibrium, some species rise in number while some other decrease.

In an area, the series of communities that experience changes is termed sere. Therefore, each community that changes is named a seral stage or seral community. If we acknowledge an area where life starts from scratch by the means of succession, it is known as primary succession. However, if life starts at a place later the area has lost all the life forms being there, the process is named secondary succession. It is clear that primary succession is a very slow process as life has to begin from nothing whereas secondary succession is faster because it begins at a place that had already supported life before. Also, the first species that comes into survival during primary succession is called a pioneer species. Xerosere, lithosere and hydrosere are some examples of ecological successions.
