When the light passes from a rarer medium to a denser medium, it bends towards normal. This bending is more if the optical density is more for that medium. The angle of incidence is the same in both and the angle of refraction is less for medium 1 . It means the bending of light is more in the case of medium 1 . Therefore, medium 1 has greater optical density.

In the table the absolute refractive indices of certain transparent media are given. Find out from the table the medium of highest and lowest optical densities.

As we know that the optical density of the material is directly related to the refractive index of the material. Therefore, material having a maximum refractive index has the maximum optical density and material having a minimum refractive index has minimum optical density. Diamond has maximum optical density and air has minimum optical density. Refraction of light will be more in the material, having higher optical density.
