The activity of a metal is its tendency to participate in a chemical reaction. Metals that reacts rapidly with most of the substances are said to be more active. For example, sodium and potassium. While the metals that do not react with most of the substances are said to be less active, for example, gold and silver.

The reactivity series also known as the activity series of the metals is a series in which metals are arranged in the decreasing order of reactivity.
At the top of the series, most reactive metal potassium is present. It is an alkali metal.
At the bottom of the series, the least reactive metal platinum is present. It is a noble metal.

Note: The reactivity series is obtained by performing displacement reactions between various metals and their salt solutions. A metal (A) having the ability to displace another metal (B) from its solution is said to be more active or reactive than metal (B).
