Degree of association (a): It is defined as the fraction of the total number of molecules which associate or combine together resulting in the formation of a bigger molecule.

When the solute undergoes association in solution, the number of particles of solute decrease in the solution. Consequently, the observed value of colligative property decreases and a higher value of molecular mass is obtained.

Degree of dissociation (D) : The degree of association can be defined as the number of moles of substance formed on dissociation.

When the solute undergoes dissociation in solution, the number of particles of solute increases in the solution. Consequently, the observed value of colligative property increases and a lower value of molecular mass is obtained.
