When the number of organisms in a population are plotted against the time, it produces the population growth curve. The growth curve could be J-shaped or S-shaped depending on the environmental resistance. J-shaped curve is also called as the exponential growth curve. When the factors of environmental resistance do not exert any influence i.e. there is plenty of food and much less number of deaths due to infection or predation (a classic species interaction that has been investigated for a very long time), the population grows exponentially or at the geometric rate. The growth curve takes the shape of letter J. Initially the growth is slow as the animals are few, but then the population grows at a rapid rate. The rapid rate occurs till enough food is available and can soar very high. In nature with limited resources, such a situation never arises and various factors of environmental resistance check the population growth rate.
