The molecule which provides energy for all the activities of a cell is Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). ATP is also known as universal energy carrier as well as energy currency of the cell. ATP carries activities like membrane transport, cytoplasmic streaming, cell movement nerve conduction, muscle contraction, etc. ATP is also called high energy molecule, because it releases a large amount of usable energy when it loses its terminal phosphate group to become adenosine diphosphate. Energy obtained from metabolism(eg-oxidation of glucose) is stored temporarily within cells in the form of ATP. The sequence of reactions which converts glucose into pyruvic acid with the production of ATP is termed as glycolysis. It is an anaerobic process and is common to both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. It is an end product of the processes of photophosphorylation, cellular respiration, and fermentation.
