Excessive rainfall may lead to floods. Heavy rain increases the water level in sea, lakes and rivers and make them overflow.

1) Heavy rain washing away seeds and precious topsoil.

2) It can damage buildings and infrastructure, and loss of crops and livestock.

3) It also causes landslide which can threaten human life to destroy transport and communications.

When there is no rainfall for a long time it leads to a condition where there is no water to meet the basic requirements. This water crisis causes drought.

Drought occurs mainly in summer months, there is no or very little rainfall during these months. Sometimes, rain may fail to appear even in monsoon season which leads to severe shortage of water.

Problems faced by the people living in areas having drought conditions are:

1. People face severe shortage of food since it is not able to grow crops in soil that do not have sufficient moisture.

2. As more water is lost as transpiration and evaporation, the groundwater level also decreases gradually.
