Photoelectric effect is the phenomenon of emission of electrons from the surface of a metal when light photons $($ electromagnetic radiation $)$ of a certain frequency strikes the metal surface. Emission of photoelectrons is an instantaneous process, or we can say that there is no time delay in the photoemission process. Number of photoelectrons emitted from the metal surface per second is directly proportional to intensity of incident light.

It is important to note that the emission of photoelectrons and the kinetic energy of the ejected photoelectrons is dependent on the frequency of the light that is incident on the metal $'$ s surface.
