An arrangement that consists of a small heavy mass which is suspended by a weightless, inextensible and perfectly string from a rigid support is called a simple pendulum.
One complete to and fro motion of the pendulum about its mean position is called one oscillation. The time taken by the pendulum to complete one oscillation is called its time period. It is denoted by T and its SI unit is second (S).

A simple pendulum consists of a small metal ball, called the bob, attached to an inextensible string, which is fixed to a rigid support. The following figure represents a simple pendulum.

The mean position is the position of the bob of the simple pendulum when it is at rest. Here it is denoted by Q. The positions of the bob of the simple pendulum when it is at the maximum distance from the mean position are called its extreme positions. Here, A and B are the extreme positions of the bob.
