What is meant by space debris? Why there is need to manage the debris?

Debris in space is a term used to describe non-essential objects circling around the earth in space. This debris has the potential to collide with satellites or spacecraft, causing damage. This debris is growing by the day. It will become increasingly difficult to launch new spacecraft in the near future. Over time, the number, mass and area of these debris objects grow steadily, boosting the risk to functioning satellites.
