Desertification is a type of land degradation in dry lands. Biological productivity is lost due to natural processes or by human activities.

Destruction of forests causes desertification.

Due to deforestation, the soil, which is tightly held by the roots, loosens and gets easily carried away by the winds.

As a result, the topsoil which is rich in humus and other nutrients, gets eroded by the wind causing the loss of fertility in the soil, which in course of time leads to desertification.

Few measures that can be taken to prevent desertification are given below:

Reintroducing crop cycle.

Initiating terrace farming.

Enriching the soil with nutrients like organic fertiliser or manure.

Planting trees as much as we can.

By land and water management, the soil is protected from soil erosion.
