Dialysis is a process of filtering smaller molecules from large ones using a semi-permeable membrane. Artificial kidneys work on the principle of dialysis.
It is used for the filtration of blood and helps to remove nitrogenous waste from the body of individuals whose kidneys have become non-functional due to kidney disease or illness. It also helps in the process of osmoregulation of blood.

The blood carrying waste is passed through the machine. The tubes in the dialyser are made of a selectively permeable membrane, and tubes are immersed in a dialysing fluid, which has the same osmotic pressure as blood but does not contain nitrogenous wastes. Smaller solutes and ions are separated from the large particles of the patient's blood. The nitrogenous wastes from the patient's blood diffuse into the dialysing fluid, and the purified blood is returned to the patient's body.
