Flux is a substance that combines with gangue which may still be present in the roasted or the calcined ore to form an easily fusible material called slag. For example.

Basic flux: In the blast furnace the metallurgy of iron $CaO$ act as the basic flux. It removes the acidic impurities of ${SiO}_{2}$ present in the ore to form fusible calcium silicate slag. $CaO (basic flux) + {SiO}_{2} (acidic impurity) \to {CaSiO}_{3} (slag)$ .

Acid flux: Copper is extracted from copper pyrites. Roasting of copper pyrites mainly gives ${Cu}_{2} S$ and $FeO$ , silica $({SiO}_{2})$ is used as the acidic flux which combines with $FeO$ to form fusible ferrous silicate slag. $FeO (basic impurity) + {SiO}_{2} (acidic flux) {FeSiO}_{3} (slag)$
