The process during which glucose is converted to pyruvic acid with the help of enzymes is glycolysis. The process of anaerobic breakdown of glucose to pyruvic acid within the cell catalysed by enzymes is known as glycolysis. It is also known as Embden Meyerhof Parnas pathway or EMP pathway. It is named after three German country biochemists. The site of glycolysis is the cytoplasm of a cell. Glycolysis can take place with or without the involvement of oxygen.

Significance of glycolysis:

The glycolysis process leads to the formation of 2 molecules of pyruvic acid which is essential for running the Krebs cycle.

The different intermediary products of glycolysis can be used by plants and animals in different metabolic functions of the body.

Process of glycolysis:

The process of glycolysis is an anaerobic process as it does not require energy. One molecule of glucose broken glycolytically to produce two molecules of pyruvic acid. In this process two molecules of ATP are used to produce 4 molecules of ATP. In the first phase ATP is used and in the second phase ATP is generated.
