Humus is formed in the soil from the remains of dead plants and animals. Note: Humus provides nutrients to the soil which is absorbed by the plant through its roots. Soil that is rich in humus is known as loamy soil.

On mountain slopes, ice, wind and rain erode solid rocks. Over a long period of time, the rocks break into smaller stones. Breaking down huge rocks into pebbles, and further into smaller pieces results in the formation of soil. This process is called weathering of rocks.
