Due to friction between the hot and clod air, static charges develop within the clouds during rainy seasons.

When two highly charged clouds come close to each other, the air between them becomes highly conducting and a large amount of electric charge flows rapidly from one cloud to the other. This is generally known as lightning.

Lightning may affect the high-rise buildings. In order to protect the buildings from lightning, a long metal rod or strip having high spikes at its upper end is fixed at highest points of the buildings. The lower end of the metal strip or rod is connected to a large copper plate which is buried deep inside the Earth. Such a rod is called the lightning conductor. This process of allowing the charge from lightning to pass through the lightning conductor to the Earth is called the process of earthing.

As all the charges flow to the ground via the lightning conductor, the damages that may be caused by lightning can be minimized.
