It consists of a transparent fluid that contains lymphocytes which protects the body by killing the germs of the body tissue by making antibodies. The fluid present in the lymphatic system is called the lymph. The organs which are made up of lymphatic tissue and secrete lymph are called the lymphatic organs. The main lymphatic organs in humans are as follows:

There are the following functions of the lymph:

1. Nutrition: The lymph takes part in the nutritive process of humans. The capillaries of lymphatic system are large in size, therefore help in the circulation of large protein molecules by carrying them from the tissues into the blood stream. The lymph also carries digested fat for nutritive process.

2. Protection: The lymph protects the body by killing the germs of the body tissue with the help of lymphocytes contained in the lymph nodes by producing the antibodies.

3. Removal of wastes: The lymph helps in removing the waste products such as fragments of dead cells, excess tissue fluid, metabolic waste products, excess proteins from the tissue, therefore maintains the composition of tissue fluid and volume of blood.
