Multipurpose river valley projects are based on dams and reservoirs constructed on rivers to serve numerous purposes for efficient water management in our country. It includes water storage by linking dams to be used for irrigation, electricity generation, navigation, fishing, flood control, controlling soil erosion, promoting tourism, etc.

The major multipurpose projects are:

The Bhakra Nangal Project was constructed across the Sutlej at Bhakhra (Himachal Pradesh) ahead of Nangal. It supplies electricity to Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi regions and also supplies water to the Ropar thermal plant.

The Beas Project was constructed at Pong on the river Beas in Himachal Pradesh. It provides irrigation to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

The Damodar Valley Project consists of a series of dams constructed on the Damodar river and its tributaries, which have helped in controlling floods. The mineral region of Jharkhand and the industrial belt of Kolkata have benefited from electricity.

The Kosi Project is a joint project constructed at the Bihar–Nepal border, and it helped to control floods caused by the Kosi river.

The Hirakud Project was started to regulate the flow of Mahanadi in Odisha. Three dams were constructed at Hirakud, Tikarpara, and Naraj. It also made navigation possible from Dholpur to Cuttak.

The Tungabhadra Project is a joint venture of the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, taken up at Tungabhadra, a tributary of the Krishna river, at Mallapuram in the Bellary district of Karnataka. Three canals, namely the Left Bank canal, the low level, and the upper-level canals, provided irrigation to both states.

The Nagarjunasagar project comprises a high-masonry dam on the Krishna river near Nandikonda village in Andhra Pradesh. It is irrigated in the districts of Khammam, West Godavari, Guntur, Kurnool, and Nellore with the help of 200 km of left and right bank canals.

The Ram Ganga project was built on the Ramganga river at Kalagarh in the Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. It checks the flood intensity in central and western Uttar Pradesh and supplies water to the Ganga canals and the Delhi Water Supply Scheme.

The Chambal project was a joint venture of the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments. Three dams-the Gandhi Sagar, Rana Sagar, and Jawahar Sagar were constructed, which, along with the Kota dam, the left and right main canals, irrigate surrounding districts of both the states.
