There are several situations in our day-to-day activities in which we have to measure position, velocity, acceleration, etc. with respect to some other object at rest or in motion. The rest or motion is not only the characteristic of an object under consideration, but it is the characteristic of the object and the observer both.

If the distance between two bodies is changes either in magnitude or in direction then one body is said to have a velocity relative to the other.

Consider the two bodies A and B moving along a straight road with velocities $\vec{v_{A}}$ is represented by line $P A$ and the velocity of body $B$ that is $\vec{v_{B}}$ , represented by the line $Q B$ .

To determine the relative velocity of $A$ with respect to $B$ , let us bring body $B$ virtually to rest. This can be done by imparting a velocity equal and opposite to that possessed body $B$ , that is $(- \vec{v_{B}})$ .

To counterbalance the effect impart same velocity, that is $(- \vec{v_{B}})$ on $A$ also.

Now, having brought body $B$ to rest,

The net velocity the body $A$ seems to have will be the relative velocity of $A$ with respect to $B$ , that is, $\vec{v_{A B}}$ .
Thus, $\vec{v_{A B}} = \vec{v_{A}} - \vec{v_{B}}$
