Sustainable Development refers to the process that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the needs of future generations.

For example, using resources in such a way that they will be available on the earth after hundreds, thousands or millions of years.

Strategies that need to be adopted to achieve sustainable development are-

Traditional Knowledge and Practices

Traditionally, the people of India were very close to their environment, they worship, protect, and do environment-friendly practices.

The shift to the modern system has caused damage to the environment and to our rural heritage. For example- AYUSH treatment has medicinal properties.

With the advent of the western system of treatment, knowledge about our traditional systems of Ayurveda, Unani, etc is getting ignored.

The environmentally friendly practices of the traditional system were free from side effects.

Use of Non-conventional Sources of Energy:

India is still dependent on the use of traditional power plants like thermal and hydro plants to meet its power needs, but these plants have adverse environmental impacts.

Non-conventional sources of energy are cleaner and greener sources but are yet to be explored on a large scale due to a lack of research and technology.

India is naturally endowed with a large quantity of solar and wind energy in the form of sunlight and local and seasonal winds respectively. With the help of photovoltaic cells, solar energy can be converted into electricity and use of windmills can be used to provide energy.
