It involves sudden and abrupt changes in the body structure of the animal due to cell growth and differentiation. It is generally observed in amphibians (example: Frogs) and insects (example: Butterflies), etc.

The examples of metamorphosis are as follows:
Metamorphosis in Frog:

The life cycle of a frog contains three life stages:
Egg $\overset{H a t c h i n g}{\to}$ Tadpole (larva) $\overset{M e t a m o r p h o s i s}{\to}$ Frog (adult)

Eggs are the result of external fertilisation which transforms into fish like tadpoles.

Tadpole has gills, small mouth and fish-like tail to swim inside the water bodies like lakes, ponds, rivers, etc.

Tadpole grows and transforms into a small frog (amphibian).

Metamorphosis in Silkmoth:

Silk moth is an insect just like a butterfly that undergoes metamorphosis during its life cycle. The silk moth passes through the larva and pupa stages during its development after hatching from the egg and forms an adult silk moth.
The life cycle of silk moth contains four life stages:
