What do you understand by the term accommodation of the eye?

The process by which the ciliary muscles alter the focal length of the crystalline lens, to focus nearer or far-off objects clearly on the retina is called the accommodation of the eye. This is done by changing the thickness of the lens and its focal length also changes with the help of ciliary muscle. When the eyes are focused at far-off objects, such as the moon, the ciliary muscles are relaxed and the eye lens is at its thinnest position, i.e., maximum focal length. When the eyes are focused on nearer objects, the ciliary muscles make the lens i.e., minimum focal length. Thus, ciliary muscles have the ability to alter the focal length of the eye lens. This property is known as the accommodation of the eye. Note: In order to focus on far-off objects, the ciliary muscles relax. In doing so, they make the crystalline lens thin.
