The parenchyma is the most common tissue found in plants. The cells of parenchyma tissues are unspecialized with thin cell walls, which are made up of cellulose. Their cells are living. These cells are found in the epidermis, cortex, pith, pericycle, etc. of stems, roots, leaves, flowers and fruits. It is also found in xylem and phloem.

The functions of parenchyma are given as follows:

Parenchyma helps to store food materials.

It acts as a packing tissue, filling the spaces between other tissues and also maintain the shape and firmness of the plant due to turgidity.

Parenchyma also stores excretory products such as gum, resins, etc.
Parenchyma called aerenchyma in aquatic plants helps in aeration of tissues.

It gives buoyancy to help them float.

Parenchyma cells containing chloroplasts called chlorenchyma helps in the process of photosynthesis.
