The separation of crude oil or petroleum into its various liquid components is known as petroleum refining.
It consists of a fractionating column that is divided into different columns. The various petroleum products are gets separated into fractions due to the difference in their boiling points.

The fractionating column has an inlet and an outlet. The vapours of crude oil are fed into the column through an inlet.
The vapours of a fraction having the highest boiling point, such as fuel oil and lubricating oil condense first near the bottom of the column. The vapours of a fraction having the lowest boiling point condense at the last near the top of the column.
