The pituitary gland is a small, pea-shaped but most important gland of the body which is attached to hypothalamus by a stalk.

The pituitary gland secretes a variety of hormones. It produces hormones and stimulate other glands to secrete their hormones, so it is called the master gland.

The hormones secreted by the pituitary gland include:
1. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)- It controls the functioning of the thyroid gland.
2. Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)- It controls the functioning of the adrenal cortex and releases mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids.
3. Luteinizing Hormone (LH)- It stimulates ovulation, the formation of corpus luteum and secretion of progesterone. In the male, it is also called interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH). It stimulates Leydig cells to secrete testosterone.
