Plants require sunlight, water, oxygen, minerals for their growth and development. These are the external factors. Apart from these, some essential agents regulate the growth and development of plants. These are called plant hormones or 'Phytohormones'. Auxins and Gibberellins are plant hormones.

Functions:-

Auxins- This hormone is present in the young leaves, seed embryo and apical bud meristem.

Auxins help to initiate rooting in the stem cuttings, an application widely used for plant propagation in horticulture.

They promote flowering an example is in pineapples.

They help to prevent fruit and leaf drop at early stages but promote the abscission of older mature leaves and fruits.

Apical dominance, auxins in the apical bud, suppresses the growth of lateral buds

They also induce the parthenocarpy. Ex: tomatoes.

They control the xylem differentiation and help in cell division.

Gibberellins:- These are present in the meristems of apical buds and roots, young leaves, and an embryo.

They stimulate stem elongation

They lead to the development of seedless fruits

Gibberellins delay senescence in leaves and citrus fruits

Ends seed dormancy in plants that need light for initiation of germination.
