There are different ways to measure the population density of a habitat, out of which three are listed below.

Physical counting: In this method, the total number of the organism in a population is counted. It is generally the most appropriate measure of population density. Examples: the number of frogs in a pond.

Percent cover or biomass cover: Sometimes, percent cover is a more meaningful measure to determine population size. Example: In a population of 200 Parthenium plants and a single huge banyan tree, the population density of the banyan tree is less relative to that of Parthenium. In such cases, the percent cover of both is taken into account.

Relative density: Sometimes, there is no need to know the absolute population density. In such cases, the relative density of the population is taken into account rather than counting the total number. For example, the number of fish caught per trap is good enough to measure its total population density in the lake.
