Sclerenchyma is a type of simple permanent tissue consisting of a very thick and hard cell wall with a very low percentage of water. Due to the loss of the living protoplasm at maturity, these cells become dead and performing mechanical function. Sclerenchymatous cells are characterised by evenly thickened lignified cell walls that performing the mechanical function. Based on the shape of the cells, two types of sclerenchyma are present: sclerenchyma fibres with narrow, elongated cells and isodiametric sclereids.

Sclerenchyma cells are found in stems, roots, leaves and hard covering of seeds and nuts. Sclerenchyma cells are long, elongated, thick-walled. They have lignified cell wall. The cells are closely packed with no intercellular spaces. Husk of coconut is made of this tissue. They are used for making mats, ropes, brushes, etc.
