Sound ranging is the method by which it is possible to measure the distance of an object such as a wall, mountain, etc. The process by which bats and dolphins detect the presence of an obstacle by hearing the echo of the sound produced by them is called sound ranging. SONAR is an example of sound-ranging. It is how a ship on the ocean uses the reflective qualities of sound waves to assess the ocean's depth is SONAR. A sound wave is emitted from the seabed and bounces off it. The distance from the ship to the bottom of the ocean can be estimated since the speed of sound is understood and the time-lapse between transmitting and receiving the sound can be measured.
