The loss of excess water or unutilised water through the aerial parts of the plant body is known as transpiration. It is a physiological process which is controlled by protoplasm and sunlight. Based on the organs which are involved in the process, the transpiration process is divided into three types:

Stomatal transpiration

Cuticular transpiration

Lenticular transpiration

The description of the stomatal and cuticular transpiration is given below:

Stomatal transpiration: The loss of water vapour through the opening of the leaves is called stomatal transpiration. It is the most dominant form of transpiration. It is responsible for 90-97% loss of water in plants.

Cuticular transpiration: The water vapour which is lost through the pore of the cuticle of the leaves directly is called cuticular transpiration. The cuticle is a waxy or resinous layer of cutin which covers the epidermis of leaves and other plant parts. Loss of water through the cuticle is only about 5-10% of the total transpiration. The thickness of the cuticle increases in xerophytes and transpiration is very reduced or totally absent.
