A hybrid is an animal or plant produced by individuals of different kinds or types. Scientists often produce a hybrid variety of a plant (or animal) by crossbreeding two varieties so that the hybrid may have the desirable characteristics of both the parent varieties. Perhaps you remember that Indian sheep are crossbred with exotic sheep to improve the quality and quantity of wool they produce. The technique of producing new varieties of a plant or animal by crossbreeding is called hybridisation.
Using hybridisation to ‘create’ high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice led to such a great increase in the production of these crops in India in the late 1960s and 1970s that this period is often called the Green Revolution. The yield of a crop means the quantity of the crop produced per unit area of land. It is measured in units such as tonnes per hectare. Some other factors that made the Green Revolution possible were the use of fertilisers and pesticides, improved irrigation and the use of modern farm equipment.
