It helps to identify the genotype or genetic constitution of the unknown progeny if it is a heterozygous or homozygous dominant. In pea plant, the tall allele is dominant over the short allele. Let's say there is a tall pea plant. To check whether the tall allele is homozygous or heterozygous, we perform a cross between the tall plant and the short plant. If the tall plant is homozygous, then all the progenies of the test cross will be tall. If the tall plant is heterozygous for the tall allele, then 50% of the plant will be tall, and 50% will be short.
