Aftershocks are smaller earthquake following the main shock of a large earthquake. Aftershocks are earthquakes that usually occur near the main shock. An aftershock results from the sudden change in stress occurring within and between rocks and the previous release of stress brought on by the principal earthquake. They are smaller than the main shock, but they can continue over a period of weeks, months or years.
