Pollen grains contain male gametes or reproductive cells in them. During pollination, pollen grains are transferred to the stigma and it germinates leading to fertilization. Micropyle is the small opening at the apex of the integument in an ovule. The pollen tube carrying the male gametes enter through the micropyle of the ovule during fertilsation. It is retained in the seed after fertilisation. When soaked, seeds absorb water mainly through the micropyle. Micropyle also helps in respiration and the exchange of gases.
