Leguminous plants such as soybeans, peas, clover, and beans form nodules on their roots where Rhizobium bacteria reside. Within these nodules, the bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia which can be directly used by the plant to synthesise essential nitrogen-containing compounds such as amino acids and proteins. By fixing nitrogen, Rhizobium bacteria provide a vital nutrient to the plants and increase the nitrogen content in the soil. The presence of Rhizobium bacteria in the root nodules of leguminous plants enriches the soil with nitrogen. As legume plants grow and eventually die, their root nodules decompose, releasing nitrogen-rich organic matter into the soil. This nitrogen becomes available for other plants, and improving soil fertility.
