Concentrated sulphuric acid acts as the dehydrating agent in this reaction as it removes one water molecule from ethanol. Thus, the first reaction is a dehydration reaction. Effectively addition reaction removes the multiple bonds by the addition of atoms or groups of atoms. Ethene undergoes the addition of chlorine to give 1 , 2 -dichloroethane as the final product.
