During summer, the land warms up faster than the water. The air over the land gets heated and rises. The rising warm air on land is replaced by moist air from the ocean and other water bodies. This results in wind blowing from the ocean towards the land. The moist air from over the ocean reaching the land is called monsoon winds. Monsoon carries water and brings heavy rain. In India, we have summer monsoon and winter monsoon. During winter, the oceans are warmer than the land. The warm and humid air from over the ocean rises and is replaced by cooler air from the land. The warm and humid air rising from the sea are clouds moving towards the land. This is called winter monsoon. Monsoon during winter is not as wet as during summer.
