What is tissue? What do you mean by meristematic tissue? How does it differ from permanent tissue?

The tissue is defined as a group of similar or dissimilar cells having a common origin and performing a common function. The cells composing a tissue may be closely packed together without any intercellular space or maybe loosely arranged with intercellular spaces. Parenchyma, sclerenchyma, xylem, etc., are the different types of plant tissues.

In plants, tissues are mainly classified into two: meristematic tissue and permanent tissue.
Meristematic tissue: It consists of cells that are always in a state of division. These are divided further based on the origin, position and function. Based on the origin, It is classified into primary and secondary meristem. On the basis of the position in the plant body, meristematic tissues are classified into apical, intercalary and lateral meristem.

The meristematic tissue consists of actively dividing cells. But cells in the permanent tissues are unable to divide. Permanent tissues are classified into simple and complex tissue based on the type of constituent cell. Simple tissue is made up of only one types of cells while different types of cells are present in complex tissues such as the xylem.
