A transistor is a type of a semiconductor device that can be used to both conduct and insulate electric current or voltage. A transistor basically acts as a switch and an amplifier and thus control the flow of electronic signals

In a semiconductors charge carries are free electrons and holes. The drift current, is due to the motion of charge carriers due to the force exerted on them by an electric field.When an electric field is applied across a semiconductor, the carriers start moving, producing a current. Drift current in a semiconductor is the resultant of carrier drift.

A NPN transistor has electrons as majority charge carriers whereas the PNP transistor has holes as majority charge carrier. The mobility of electrons is better than mobility of holes. The mobility of electrons is more than hole, so as a result n-p-n transistor are faster than p-n-p hence preferred in fast response devices.
