Vegetative propagation is a type of asexual reproduction in which vegetative parts such as root, stem and leaves of a plant develops into a new plant.

Vegetative propagation is of two types.

1. Natural vegetative propagation. Natural vegetative propagation happens when plants grow and develop naturally from its root, stem or leaf without human intervention.

Different methods of natural vegetative propagation are:

By modified root: The root is modified for the storage of food produced by the plant. It is swollen and irregularly shaped due to food storage. They give rise to new plants from their fleshy roots.

By stems: Some plants have underground stems that are modified for storage of food.These underground stems such as tuber, rhizomes, runners, bulb and corn produce new plants from their buds. Ginger, onion, etc are some examples of this.

By leaf: The leaves of some plants develop small buds called adventitious buds on their margin. These buds grow into new plant when the leaf break away from the parent plant and comes in contact with soil.

2. Artificial method of vegetative propagation

Artificial vegetative propagation is a type of plant reproduction that involves human intervention. Cutting, grafting, budding, layering and tissue culture are some common modes of artificial modes of vegetative propagation.

Cutting: In this method, a healthy branch of a plant having leaf buds is cut off and planted in the moist soil. The cutting develops roots and develops into a new plant, similar to the parent plant. Examples: sugar cane, rose

Grafting: It is a method in which two parts of different plants are joined together in such a way that they will unite and grow as one plant. A portion of one plant (bud or scion) is placed into or on a stem, root, or branch of another (stock) plant. Examples: Mango, guava

Layering:In layering, a part of the stem of a plant is pulled and buried in soil, while it is attached and supported by the parent plant. After a few days roots develop from the covered part. It can be cut and grow into new plant. Examples, jasmine, Bougainvillea.

Tissue culture: Tissue culture is the growth of tissues or cells in an artificial medium separate from the parent organism. Once the root and shoot develops, the plants are shifted to pots containing soil to allow them to grow into new plants. Examples: Orchids, Asparagus.
