Venation is the mode of arrangement of veins and veinlets over the lamina of the leaves. There are mainly two types of venation found in plants: parallel and reticulate.

i) Reticulate venation: In this type, the veins and veinlets are distributed in an irreguar manner and formed like a network. It is the characteristic feature of dicotyledons. Examples: china rose, guava, mango, etc. It is divided into two: Unicostate or pinnate and Multicostate or palmate.

a) Unicostate: The main nerve that passes from the base of the petiole to the leaf apex is known as costa or midrib. It bears many laterally placed veins. Hence, it possesses a single prominent vein, called unicostate. Examples: Ficus, mango, etc.

b) Multicostate: In this case, strong veins are more than one. When costa arising at the petiole, diverge from one another towards the margin of the leaf, never meeting with each other, it is called reticulate divergent type. Examples: china rose. When the costa run in a curved form from the base and converge towards the apex, it is called reticulate convergent type. Examples: Cinnamon

ii) In parallel venation, the veins run parallel to one another instead of forming a network. It is the characteristic feature of monocotyledons. Example: bamboo, banana, etc. It may be unicostate with a single prominent midrib or multicostate with more than one midrib. Multicostate may be divergent and convergent.
