In metropolitan cities, more than twenty-five percent of the population lives in slums. The houses in slum areas are kutcha houses made of bricks, mud, tin sheets, bamboo, tarpaulin sheets, etc.

The characteristic features of the slum areas are substandard, dingy houses of high density and congestion, unsanitary conditions, absence of basic amenities like water supply, drainage and sewerage, and disposal of garbage. The living area is so small that it is mainly used for the storage of household items. Other chores like cooking, bathing, and sleeping are done in the open. There are common water taps and public conveniences.
