A short note on the Permanent Settlement:-

The British Government began to devise ways to increase their income in the form of land tax. The Permanent Settlement was introduced under the Governor-Generalship of Lord Cornwallis.

He declared that a person who wished to become a permanent landowner, a zamindar of the village had to bid the highest in the auction for collecting maximum revenue. This was also called as the landlord system. It enabled these people to become owners of the land, but they could maintain ownership till the time they paid the revenue.

The British Government exercised the right to remove the landholders and confiscate their lands. The practice was started in Bengal, Orissa and Awadh provinces.
