Burhan-ul-Mulk Saadat Khan, the Nawab of Awadh, reduced the number of Jagirdars and the size of the jagirs. He did this to decrease the Mughal influence in Awadh. Instead, he appointed his own trusted servants in their place and acquired several Rajput zamindaris and fertile lands from the Afghans of Rohilkhand.

The first independent Nawab of Bengal was Murshid Quli Khan. He changed the jagirdari system into the zamindari system in his territory. He formulated strict rules to collect revenue. Sometimes the zamindars had to borrow money from the bankers and moneylenders. Those who were unable to pay were forced to sell their land and property to the larger zamindars.
