Oogenesis is initiated during the embryonic development stage when a couple of million gamete mother cells (oogonia) are formed within each fetal ovary; no more oogonia are formed and added after birth. These cells start division and enter into prophase-I of the meiotic division and get temporarily arrested at that stage, called primary oocytes. Oogenesis involves three key phases: proliferation, growth, and maturation, during which PGCs progress to primary oocytes, secondary oocytes, and then to mature ootids. It differs from spermatogenesis in that it begins in the foetus prior to birth.

The three hormones by which the process of oogenesis are controlled includes estrogen, progesterone, FSH or Follicle Stimulating Hormone and LH or Luteinizing Hormone.

Estrogen and progesterone are secreted by the ovaries and the corpus luteum. Follicle Stimulating Hormone or FSH and LH are produced by the pituitary in the brain.
