Sedimentary rock Shale Shale is a smooth sedimentary rock made of hardened layers of clay. It is a soft rock that breaks easily. The most common use of shale is to make bricks and tiles. It also contains some organic matter that breaks down into oil. Igneous rock Pumice Pumice is a type of igneous rock which is a very light and porous volcanic rock. It is generally light grey in colour. When lava cools and solidifies quickly on the earth's surface, it forms the pumice rock.
