Every object in the earth is attracted towards its centre by a force called gravitational force which is a non-contact force. The earth exerts this force on all the bodies within the gravity region of the earth. This gravitational force with which the earth attracts a body towards its centre is also called its weight. Drawing out of water from a well is an example of a muscular force, as it requires much more energy and acceleration to overcome the gravitational pull of the earth. It involves the muscle strength of the humans to draw out water from the well. This force is a contact force as the action requires a connection with humans. A ball that is thrown by a bowler in a particular direction causes a change in direction when it is stricken by a batsman because it causes an external force to act on the ball bringing about a change in its path. Thus, there occurs a change in direction of motion of ball. By applying external forces, the state of a body can be changed. The force applied to move a stationary object or to stop a moving object are some effects of force and these changes are due to the impact of external force applied. Thus, a boy pulling the rope tied to the collar of his goat tends to bring about some change as an impact of this pulling force. When two forces are acting on a body, the total effect of all these forces together acts as a single force. When the forces are applied in the opposite direction, the resultant of the two forces acting in different direction will be the differences between the two forces.
