What are present along with pure alumina in the molten mixture which is electrolysed for the extraction of aluminium by electrolysis? What is used as cathode and anode in this electrolysis?

The principal ore of aluminium, bauxite, usually contains SiO 2 , iron oxides and titanium oxide ( TiO 2 ) as impurities. Electrolysis is used to extract aluminium from alumina. The Bayer Process converts the ore into pure aluminium oxide, which is subsequently electrolyzed in solution in molten cryolite, another aluminium compound. The melting point of the alumina is lowered by dissolving it in a mixture of molten cryolite and fluorspar. Thereafter, it's electrolyzed in a rectangular steel tank with a carbon lining that serves as the cathode. The anode is made up of thick carbon rods dangling from the top of the fused Al 2 O 3 . The temperature is kept between 1200 and 1310 degrees Celsius. At the anode, oxygen is produced. Al 2 O 3 → 2 Al 3 + + 3 O 2 - At cathode:: 2 Al 3 + + 6 e - → 2 Al At anode:: 3 O 2 - → 1 . 5 O 2 + 6 e - Aluminium formed at the cathode gets collected at the bottom of the electrolytic cell from where it is removed periodically.

It has low density, is non-toxic, has a high thermal conductivity, has excellent corrosion resistance and can be easily cast, machined and formed. It is also non-magnetic and non-sparking. It is the second most malleable metal and the sixth most ductile element.
