The ventricles are responsible for pumping blood to either the lungs (in the case of the right ventricle) or the body's tissues (in the case of the left ventricle). This requires generating a significant amount of force to overcome the resistance of the blood vessels and push blood through them. As a result, the walls of the ventricles are much thicker and more muscular than the atria to generate this force and maintain efficient blood flow.
