Frictional force plays an important role in our daily life. It has some advantages as well as disadvantages.

Advantages of friction:

1) Friction helps us to walk without slipping.
2) The friction between paper and pen enables us to write.
3) Friction helps us to pick up and hold things in our hands.
4) A matchstick lights up due to the heat produced by friction between the head of the matchstick and the lighting surface of a matchbox.

Disadvantages of friction:

1) Wear and tear: The soles of our shoes and tyres of vehicles wear out due to friction. It also causes wear and tear in the moving parts of machines.
2) Friction causes unwanted heating of the moving parts of machines. This leads to the wastage of useful energy.
3) Friction leads to an increase in fuel consumption in automobiles.
4) Friction reduces the motion of moving parts of a machine.

Due to these advantages and disadvantages, friction is known as a necessary evil.
